David Rankin English, Australian, American, b. 1946-

David Rankin is a British born Australian artist who immigrated to Australia with his family in 1948. He was raised in a rural area just outside of Sydney, called Port Hacking. As he grew up there, he discovered a passion for Chinese, Indian and Aboriginal artwork. His style of painting is mainly characterized by the merging of Eastern themes with Western abstraction. He paints colourful landscapes as well as abstract portraits, which can be characterized by his attention to detail when it comes to the texture of the person’s hair that he is painting as well as the subject’s large eyes.

Currently, Rankin lives and works in New York. His works are exhibited in many prestigious galleries around Australia, including the Australian National Gallery in Canberra, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, among others.
