Sue MacLeod-Beere New Zealand, Australian, b. 1956-
Sue is a Sydney based colourist who finds depth of meaning in the simplest still life or the way light falls across a picket fence, taking the viewer on a path forward to an unknown destination. Sue's work is a reaction to her environment, exploring the subtleties within, beyond the distraction of the conspicuous. The depth and the emotion she finds in her surroundings- be they landscapes, people or interiors, comes to life in a gentle and elegant way.
Her challenge is painting directly from life to get a marker in a moment of time. Out of a flurry of chaos searching for a calm centre. Plein air painting is a particular passion for the immediacy of it.
"I'm constantly intrigued by the depth of the subject not initially observed - a story within. I'm open to be led on the treasure hunt. It can take me down some dark paths at times following threads of consciousness- collectors comment on this mood."
Her preferred medium is oil paint on board and canvas.
Sue has been seleted as a finalilst in nuerous prizes including the Mosman Art Prize and EMSLA Still Life Award. the Gallipoli Art Prize and the Ravenswood Women's Prize.

Stranger at the Door
Sue MacLeod-Beere 15 - 31 Jul 2021Sue is a locally based oil painter from Gladesville, Sydney. Her Stranger at the Door exhibition explores worlds within worlds, environments that aren't always what they seem. The title, "Stranger at the Door", comes from the painting of the same name, created in 2020 when anxieties were high, fearing our neighbours or even the groceries left at the door. MacLeod-Beere sets out to capture the unsettling presence in the everyday within moody canvases, mostly executed `en plein air'.Read more
