Bill Undery Australian, b. 1955

Overview

Working from his studio in Wilson's Creek, Mullumbimby in Nothern NSW, Bill Undery is an established artist with a rich and varied history. Commencing his career over 40 years ago as a graduate of East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School), Undery works with oil and acrylic to depict his surrounds.

 

Undery focuses on the frequently overlooked charm of everyday encounters,  capturing the temperature and temperament of Australian rural, city and cultural life. Exhibited in numerous national and regional exhibitions, Bill  is recognised as one of Australia's  leading surrealist painters..

 

A past finalist in the prestigious Archibald and Wynne Prizes at the Art Gallery of NSW, and The Blake Prize for religious art, Undery has also been awarded the Australian Production Design Guild Artisan Award for lifetime achievement on cinematic creative projects that include Baz Luhrman's 'Moulin Rouge'.

1955       Born in Sydney

1974-77  East Sydney Technical College and Alexander Mackie College. Diploma in Fine Art, Painting & Drawing

1975       Included in Young Contemporaries exhibition at the Hogarth Galleries, Paddington, Australia

1976       Young Contemporaries exhibition. Hogarth Galleries, Paddington, Australia

1977       Included in Wynne Prize, Art Gallery of NSW, Australia

               Included in the Blake Prize.

1978       Two-man show, Stairs Gallery, Wollongong, Australia

1979       Included in Archibald Prize, Art Gallery of NSW, Australia 

               Part-time teacher at Fairfield Evening College.

1981-82  Part-time teacher, Painting at Engadine Evening College. 

               Awarded third prize at Goulburn College Art Exhibition, Australia

1982       Awarded First prize (watercolour section) at Campbelltown City Art Exhibition, (Acquisitive), Australia

1983       Included in "A Real Surprise" at the Penrith Regional Gallery, Australia

               Included in Bathurst Art Purchase Exhibition, Australia

1984       Two-man show, Watercolours Painters Gallery.

               Featured in "Art in Australia" September issue.

1986       Included in art purchase print and drawing exhibition, Swan Hill Regional Gallery, Victoria, Australia

1986+   Scenic artist on numerous Australian and International Film productions and mural work on various buildings including Powerhouse Museum and Sydney Aquarium and private commissions.

2003     Included in group show, Barry Stern Galleries. Paddington, Australia

2005     Awarded Highly Commended Prize in "Chalk the Walk" Inaugural pavement art competition, Pyrmont Bridge, Sydney, Australia

2006     Musee' du Quay Branly, Paris, France. One of the artists responsible for reproducing on museum ceilings major works by selected aboriginal artists including John Mwurrungil in conjunction with Australia council and Aboriginal Arts Council.

2007     Exhibited in Art International, Guaranty Trust Bank, Nassau, Bahamas
