Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa Indigenous Australian, b. 1935-2013
Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa (aka Mrs. Bennett) is an extremely important artist that has exhibited widely across Australia, Singapore and Germany. She paints her mother’s dreamings, which are connected to sites at Yumarra, Wantjunga and Tjalilli. She is extremely interested in women’s culture and is very inspired by women’s ceremonies and rituals, which are reoccurring themes in her work. Nyurapayia likes strong colour contrasts in her work, typically using blacks and pale yellows/creams against a red background.
Even though she lived in Kintore, she maintained a style that was characteristically her own. This individualism made her one of the most respected Papunya Tula women artists.
In ‘Australia Art Collector’ Issue 15, January-March 2001, Nyurapayia was rated in the top 50 of Australia’s most collectable artists. Her work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, The Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, National Gallery of Victoria, Artbank and in corporate and private collections internationally.
Sadly, Mrs Bennett passed away on January 28th, 2013 near her Country, Punkilpirri.
