This painting is based on a courtroom illustration sketched by Julian Ashton for the Illustrated Australian News at the trial of Ned Kelly.

Ned, not wanting to be sketched, asked for Ashton to be removed from the courtroom, which indeed he was!

Who’d ever have thought that the founder of the Sydney Art School had once, been removed from court, by none other than the infamous Ned Kelly, and for drawing nonetheless!
