The writing on Ned’s beard in this painting is an extract from the infamous ‘Jerilderie Letter’ penned by Joe Byrne on Kelly’s behalf, in which Kelly attempted to explain the killing of three police officers at Stringybark Creek (as well as other matters) in the hope that the letter would be printed and distributed as pamphlets, potentially being published in national newspapers.

Ned Kelly is Australia’s most well know 19th century individual with a large portion of Australians viewing him as a national hero and icon.

What is it about Ned Kelly that allows some people to turn a blind eye to actions that others would call cold-blooded murder?
